Yesterday I read in article on Gawker titled “Pretty Girls Becoming Popular Online: What Does It Mean?”.  It just about made my jaw drop.  According to the article, a pretty girl can’t be smart or interested in technology or gadgets or anything of that sort, it just doesn’t happen.  And if she is and becomes popular because of it, well then she obviously only became popular because she’s attractive.

“Justine Ezarik is a pretty blond girl who calls herself “iJustine” and gets hundreds of thousands of hits on her YouTube videos of her doing completely irrelevant bullshit like shopping or telling boring stories to the camera, because of the fact that young men will generally watch pretty blond girls do anything, which then makes said girl popular, which then attracts young female viewers, who will watch popular girls do anything.”

It’s awful.  I am actually an iJustine fan, and stumbled across her website one day when I searched google for “best iPhone apps”.  I had no clue who she was, but I watched her video and was really quite surprised at how much she seemed to know.  This then led me to explore the rest of her blog which is full of information and all around enjoyable.  She blogs about all kinds of things, technology, things she has recently done, projects she is currently working on, conferences she has recently attended as well as much much more.

I really think that article is awful.  It’s mean and stereotypical and quite ignorant.  I mean pretty much what they are saying is that because she is a pretty girl with blonde hair, a tan, and a nice smile there is just no way that she can know anything about technology or the internet or anything else related.  Well… apparently anyone who is into “that sort of stuff” should look like this…

I hope that you go and check out the article.  Oh yeah, I love how they also put up a video of her shopping.  There were SO many other videos of her they could have chosen, but of course, they chose that one.  Apparently a pretty girl cannot become popular online because of what she knows and what she has to say.. it MUST be because she is pretty.  Check out the article here.
